my camera lens has been returned, in working order.... with great speed & delight, i photographed my two current favorite projects. both are for the upcoming quilt show i am coordinating. i have less than a month to finish them.
i am using 1800s reproduction fabrics for my basket quilt and striving for a soft, blended look without a lot of contrast. this far into the project, i am wishing i had planned fewer basket blocks for this bed-sized, and left room for more borders. but i'm loving the yummy colors and how they work together. click here to see this quilt at the beginning, when only one basket had been visualized.
this is a quilt i planned for baby grace when i was pregnant. i started working on it the day before she was born, and it has sat waiting until last week. i decided to hand piece it, because of all the curves and set in seams, and i have been pleasantly surprised to be reminded of how much i LOVE to hand piece. i rarely allow myself the luxury, because i feel i don't have the time. but it is so much more relaxing and enjoyable than sitting behind a noisy sewing machine that shuts me off from conversation with my family. I can hand piece anywhere, even away from home. and i can be right in the middle of my family, engage in relaxed conversation, watch general conference, sit next to brock as he works, etc. AND i love the feel of the fabric and needle in my hands. PLUS, i really hasn't taken that much longer, and i've loved every minute of it.
i'm using 1930's reproduction prints for this quilt, and because it is for gracie, i'm including her signature fabric.
i am also working on a vintage quilt (made from real 1930's fabric), as a restoration project. the block pattern is "star of the east". this photo shows a block that i have restored (but not yet re-quilted), using vintage 1930's fabric.
this is a damaged block that i have started to take apart, removing the damaged fabrics. this sweet quilt was made in 1940 by the grandmother of the gentleman who hired me to restore it. he is in his 70s. the yellow backing on this quilt was used as a backdrop for gracie's quilt blocks.
