today is "setsubun", the traditional end of winter in japan. interesting that it comes the day after groundhog day (happy birthday Gina, our favorite groundhog!). on setsubun, people throw dried beans in their homes to scare away "oni" (evil spirits or demons). children also make and wear "oni" masks, and eat candy coated dried beans.
here are 3 year old mia and 9 1/2 month old noah on setsubun 2 years ago. we made the masks at an activity day for younger children at the "yochien" (kindergarten) that mia now attends.
